Superman Special Editions Coming

Ilya Salkind, who produced the first three Christopher Reeve Superman films, has revealed that Warner Bros. is in fact working on special edition DVDs for all five Supes pictures from that era (that includes the little-remembered Supergirl). The plan, of course, appears to be to target the release of the DVDs to cash in on the studio’s Superman Returns.

Superman Homepage managed to get Salkind on the phone recently, who explained that he “is indeed working with Michael Thau, the producer and restoration supervisor on the 2001 special edition of Superman: The Movie.” The plan is to create new special edition DVDs of the films, including, apparently, the restoration of footage from Superman II long unseen by fans (or, at least, “officially” unseen by fans).

“Scenes shot by fired director Richard Donner (who directed Superman: The Movie), including all of [Marlon] Brando’s work for the second film, may finally see the light of day,” reports the site.

Whether this will result in a “Donner” cut of the film or simply in deleted scenes included as extra features remains to be seen.

Superman Returns is a Movie You "Can't Miss"

Associated Press has published thier list of "Can't Miss" films for 2006. Proudly topping the list is Bryan Singers, Superman Returns! Take a look at the quote from the article:

"Superman Returns" (June 30): Admit it. For all the X-Men, Bat guys, Spideys and Fantastic Foursomes prancing around on screen, the Boy Scout from Krypton is still your favorite superhero.

As the last "Superman" franchise did when it launched in the 1970s with an unknown named Christopher Reeve in the title role, "Superman Returns" has a fresh face, Brandon Routh.

"I never intended to cast a well-known actor," said "Superman Returns" director Bryan Singer, who made the first two "X-Men" movies. "A known actor comes with baggage, and Superman as a character is much larger than any actor. I wanted him to come just with the baggage of the superhero. That's enough history to contend with."

"Superman Returns" draws its star power from Routh's colleagues, Kevin Spacey as super-villain Lex Luthor and Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane.

While it's not a sequel to the four movies Reeve starred in, "Superman Returns" is "sequel-like," the new movie drawing on the spirit and design of the earlier franchise, Singer said.

The premise: Called away on urgent off-world business, Superman comes back to Earth years later to renew his romantic dance with Lois and save us puny mortals -- again.
